आज जब भी कोई गाँव का नाम लेता है तो एक अलग ही छवि उभरती है। वह छवि कहती है कि वहाँ गरीबी है। वहाँ अशिक्षा और अज्ञान है। वहाँ अंध-विश्वास है। गंदगी है। बीमारी है। हमें विचार करना है कि सच क्या है ? क्या हमारे गाँव ऐसे ही थे जैसे आज हैं? आज जो गाँवों की दुर्दशा हुई है उसके लिए जिम्मेदार कौन है? इन सवालों की पड़ताल करते हुए हमें नई समझ बनानी है तथा गाँवों के सही स्वरूप की पहचान करनी है। वैसे यह खुदा का शुक्र है कि गाँवों पर कई तरह के आक्रामक दुष्प्रभावों के बावजूद उनका मूल स्वरूप नहीं बदला है। जो दूरस्थ गाँव हैं शहर के पड़ोस से दूर उनकी निजता तो खासी बची हुई है। ऐसी स्थिति में हमारा दायित्व, एक शिक्षित समाज का दायित्व क्या बनता है? हमें विचार करना है। मगर ऐसा कोई भी विचार गाँवों को आँखों से देखे बिना, स्वयं देख कर समझे बिना नहीं किया जा सकता । तो हमें अपनी फर्स्ट हैंड समझ बनाने के लिए गाँव चलना है।
अपने मूल स्वरूप में गाँव एक वेधशाला है। एक विद्याशाला है। गाँव वेधशाला या प्रयोगशाला इसलिए है कि ज्ञान को रोज वहाँ कर्म की कसौटी पर कसा जाता है। आजमाया जाता है। जो ज्ञान कर्म की कसौटी पर खरा न उतरे तो उसे खारिज कर दिया जाता है। हर ज्ञान के होने की शर्त यह है वह सृजन और उत्पादन की शान पर तराशा जाए ।
