Face Value and Place Value

Face Value : The face value of a digit in a number is the value of the digit itself, regardless of its position in the number. The face value of a digit remains the same no matter where it is located within the number.

Note :  The face value is the number itself. 

Example 

In the number 43857, the face value of 4 is 4, the face  value of 3 is 3 and so on.  

 

Place Value (Local Value) : The place value of a digit in a number depends on its position in the number. It is determined by multiplying the face value of the digit by the value of the place (unit, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.) that the digit occupies.

 


Example

In the number 58321, we can find the place value of all  the digits by expanding the number as

5 × 104 + 8 × 103 + 3 × 102 + 2 × 101 + 1 × 10o.

So, The place  value of 5, 8, 3 and 2 in the given number is 50000, 8000,  300 and 20, respectively.

 

Shortcut  

Face value Digit itself as a number.  

Place value Insert as many number of zeroes after the digit as the  number of succeeding digits after that digit.  

 

Example

Given number is 8321947.  Here, the face value of 2 = 2 and the place value of 2 = 20000 

 

Q. In the number 4753, the place value of:

  • 4 (thousands place) is 4 × 1000 = 
  • 7 (hundreds place) is 7 × 100 =700
  • 5 (tens place) is 5 × 10 = 50
  • 3 (units place) is 3 × 1 = 3

 

Q. Consider the number 28649.

The face value and place value of each digit are as follows:

  • Digit : 2, Face Value : 2, Place Value : 2 × 10000 =  (ten thousand place)
  • Digit : 8, Face Value : 8, Place Value : 8 × 1000 =8000 (thousand place)
  • Digit : 6, Face Value : 6, Place Value : 6 × 100 = 600 (hundred place)
  • Digit : 4, Face Value : 4, Place Value : 4 × 10 = 40 (tens place)
  • Digit : 9, Face Value : 9, Place Value : 9 × 1 = 9 (units place)

Q. What is the difference between the place and  face values of 3 in 52310

a. 128 b. 225
c. 285 d. 297

Solution : 

  • Face value of 3 = 3
  • Place value of 3 = 300
  • Required difference = 300 - 3 = 297

 

 

Decimal System :  In decimal system, we use ten symbols  0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, which are called digits. These digits  are valid on National and International levels both.  

 

Numeration System : Numeration system deals with  expressing a number in words.

b. Five million eight thousand seventy one  

  • 5 × 106 + 8 × 103 + 7 × 10 + 1 × 1
  • 5000000 + 8000 + 70 + 1
  • 5008071

 

Q. Convert each of the following numbers into  words in both Indian and International Systems. 

(i) 973276  

Indian System = Nine lakh seventy three thousand two hundred  seventy six.  

International System = Nine hundred thousand seventy three  thousand two hundred seventy six.  

 

(ii) 1000567  

Indian System = Ten lakh five hundred sixty seven.  

International System = One million five hundred sixty seven.
