Established as a game reserve in 1928, it became a Tiger Reserve in 1974, a World Heritage Site in 1985, and a Biosphere Reserve in 1989. Declared a National Park in 1990, it covers 500 square kilometers and is part of the 2600-square-kilometer Chirang Ripu Elephant Reserve. The park is home to over 22 endangered species listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, ensuring their highest level of protection.
